Full description

The Ancient Village of Taro

Taro Village dates back to the 8th century and is considered the birthplace of the Subak irrigation system. Unlike the commercialized streets of central Ubud, life in Taro moves at a traditional pace. You will walk along quiet village paths lined with ornate stone gates, away from the noise of scooters and souvenir shops.

Inside a Balinese Family Compound

We do not visit a “model” village. You will be welcomed into a real, multi-generational family compound. Your local guide will explain the sacred geometry of the home—why the family temple must face the mountains and how the Bale (pavilions) are used for everything from sleep to sacred ceremonies.

Subak, Rice Paddies & Bamboo Forests

The walk continues into the hinterlands surrounding the village. You will trek through rice paddies and bamboo forests while your guide explains the cooperative farming methods that have sustained Bali for a thousand years. This is a slow-paced walk designed for photography and cultural questions.

FAQs: Guided Taro Village & Cultural Tour in Ubud

While standard Ubud tours drive you to crowded commercial spots like the Monkey Forest or the Royal Palace, a true village tour is a quiet, on-foot cultural walk through an ancient residential area like Taro Village. It is the best way to experience the actual cultural heart of Bali, far away from heavy tourist traffic.

You can wear any color you like in Bali, including red! However, because we are entering a traditional family compound and local village temples, modest clothing is required. Please ensure your shoulders and knees are covered. We can provide a traditional sarong if needed. Comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes and a hat are highly recommended.

Balinese people are incredibly welcoming. A polite way to greet the locals in the village is by saying “Om Swastiastu” with your hands pressed together. Regarding affection, public displays of affection (like kissing on the lips) are considered inappropriate inside traditional family compounds and temples out of respect for the sacred spaces. Holding hands is perfectly fine.

We run this tour with a minimum of 2 people. If you are a solo traveler, please contact us via WhatsApp to see if we have an existing group you can join.

While Bali is a tropical island, snake sightings during our daytime village and farm walks are extremely rare. Our guides walk these paths daily, and the trails are well-cleared. It is a highly safe environment for families and children.
