Pick-Up and Welcome

Your day starts with a warm Balinese greeting and an easy pick-up from Ubud. Our driver meets you at a designated meeting point, then you travel together to the farm in a comfortable vehicle. On the way, you meet your small group, chat about your travels, and watch the city fade into rice fields and village life on the road to Taman Dukuh.

Visit a Local Market (for morning class only)

Before reaching the farm, we visit a local market outside central Ubud where Balinese families shop every day. Your instructor shows you different types of rice, fresh coconut, and key ingredients used in Balinese spice pastes and sauces. You can take photos, try local snacks, and observe daily life. It is your first taste of authentic Bali, far from the typical tourist stops.

Arrival at Our Organic Farm

After the market, we arrive at Taman Dukuh, our working organic farm near Ubud. The kitchen sits among fruit trees and green gardens where we grow many of the herbs and vegetables you will cook with. We walk through the farm, explain how we plant and harvest, and show you how “farm-to-table” works in Bali. Many guests say this is a highlight of their trip.

Cooking Your Own Balinese Meal

In our open-air kitchen, each guest has a personal cooking station and tools. Guided by Chef Nyoman Deren and our local team, you grind fresh bumbu spice pastes, prepare dishes from our Balinese menu, and learn simple techniques you can repeat at home. The class is fully hands-on, easy to follow, and suitable for beginners and confident home cooks alike.

Enjoy Everything You Cook

During the class, we follow a relaxed “cooking – eating – cooking – eating” rhythm. The session is usually split into 2 or 3 rounds. This way you always enjoy the food while it is hot and fresh from the wok. Many guests say this is the best meal of their Bali trip and that they feel confident to cook these dishes at home.

What Makes Our Ubud Cooking Class Different

There are many cooking classes in Bali, but our guests tell us that Taman Dukuh is special for several reasons:

  • A real organic farm near Ubud
We are not just a kitchen with a garden. Your class takes place in the middle of a working organic farm, where you can see how the ingredients grow before you cook with them.
  • Small groups with pair-up
Every two guests share one cooking station with their own burner, wok, and tools. You get hands-on practice while enjoying the social side of cooking with a partner. You do not stand at the back and watch; you are always involved.
  • Hands-on from the first chop to the last garnish
You make every step yourself instead of only helping with small parts. For example, you prepare spice paste, mix your own satays, and do your own vegetables.
  • Local instructors who teach from real home experience
Our team grew up cooking these recipes in their family kitchens. They do not just follow a script. They share personal tips, cultural stories, and tasting advice. Learn more here: our cooking instructors.
  • Farm-to-table focus
We walk the farm, pick ingredients, and cook with what is in season. You truly connect the field, the kitchen, and your plate.
  • Community and sustainability at the heart of our project
Taman Dukuh started as a family dream to protect Balinese food traditions and support sustainable farming. Every class you join helps us support our local team and keep this heritage alive.
